### **Use case 1: Change the jurisdictions and see the impact on the total budget**

Unselect France and Germany and it becomes more cost-effective to take the European patent validations route.

### **Use case 2: Change the lifetime of the patent and see the impact on the total budget**

Reduce the lifetime of the patent in Italy and the Netherlands to 7 years and it becomes more cost-effective to take the European patent validations route.

### **Use case 3: Dig into the figures**

This section focuses on the figures behind the simulation.

- The first use case shows the impact that requesting unitary effect has on figures when filing a translation initially prepared for a validation.
- The second use case shows the impact on figures when a specific translation needs to be prepared to request unitary effect.

#### **Use case 3.1: File a translation prepared for a validation to request unitary effect**

- *Language of the proceedings: English*
- *The time between application and grant: 48 months*
- *Number of words in the description: 4500*
- *Number of words in the claims: 500*
- *IP Firm service fee on European patent validations and Maintenance: 100 EUR*

**Note:** The maintenance fees start to be paid in the jurisdictions the year following the grant of the patent.

#### **Use case 3.2: File a full translation specifically prepared to request unitary effect**

#### **Use case 3.3: Not selecting any jurisdictions that have ratified or signed the UPCA**

In the present use case, as the United Kingdom and Spain are not part of the Unitary Patent system, the simulator assumes that the Unitary Patent route shall not be taken. Therefore, the prices are the same in the two scenarios and correspond to the costs of the annuities paid at the European Patent Office before the grant of the patent and the costs of the validations and maintenance in the United Kingdom and Spain.
