Where do the fees used in the Unitary Patent Simulator come from?

The simulator uses real official fees and a combination of average market price and your IP Firm fees for the service and translation fees

The simulator considers three types of fees:

• Official fees
• Service fees (average market price)
• Translation fees (average market price)

On top of these fees, you have the possibility to add your own service fees for handling European patent validations and the payment of the annuities.

Official fees

The official fees used in the simulator are the real official fees for European patent validations and maintenance. They have been converted into euros when applicable.

The official fees are regularly updated.

Service and translation fees

European patent validations

The simulator uses average market prices for European patent validations. The fees vary depending on the jurisdiction and, for the translation fees, the language of the proceedings at the European Patent Office.

Request for unitary effect

The simulator assumes an 800 EUR service fee for requesting the unitary effect.

In the event the language of the proceedings is English and it is not possible to file the request for unitary effect with a full translation of the patent into any other official language of the European Union, that has been prepared for validation, in a jurisdiction that has not ratified the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court (typically a Spanish or Polish translation for instance), a specific translation needs to be prepared. The simulator assumes 24 EUR / 100 words for this translation.

Maintenance

The simulator uses an average market price of a 30 EUR service fee for paying the annuity in every jurisdiction and at the European Patent Office.

IP firm service fee

It is possible to add an additional IP firm fee for performing a validation or paying an annuity on top of each jurisdiction's average market price. The default IP firm service fee is 100 EUR. This amount can be customized.
